The Cabbage Diet

The Diet Plan

The cabbage diet is a short term diet that claims to help dieters lose weight quickly.  The basic plan is eat all the cabbage soup you want in a seven day period with specific foods eaten on each day along with the soup.  No one knows where the diet started and no one seems to claim it but it is often reported to help people lose 10lbs in a week. The cabbage diet present here represents a consensus of sources.

Success with this diet lies with keeping strictly to the seven day plan.  A cabbage soup recipe is at the bottom of this page.

Day 1 - Have as much Cabbage Soup and fruit as you like with no bananas.

Day 2 - Eat as much Cabbage soup as you like with vegetables and one baked potato with a little butter.

Day 3 - Eat as much Cabbage soup as you like with fruit and vegetables (no baked potato or bananas)

Day 4 - Cabbage soup with up to 8 bananas and as much skimmed milk as you want.

Day 5 - Cabbage soup with up to 20 ounces of beef and up to 6 tomatoes.

Day 6 - Cabbage soup with as much beef and vegetables (still no potatoes) as you want.

Day 7 - Cabbage soup with brown rice, vegetables (thats right, no potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

For the vegetables, try to stay away from the high starch or carbohydrate foods.

The Upside
* The reports indicate that people can lose around 10 pounds in one week.
* You can eat all the cabbage soup that you want, and on certain days lots of fruit and veggies.

The Downside
* This is a diet that you should not do longer than a week.
* The weight you are losing is most likely not from fat but probably water loss and maybe even muscle loss.
* As you know, eating lots of cabbage has some gassy side effects.  Will your friends or family want to be in the same room?
* You may feel weak and light headed
* From a general health standpoint, the cabbage diet is not balanced, and you are practically starving yourself to lose some quick pounds.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

1 large onion, diced
3 green onions or one leek (mostly the white part), diced
2 celery stalk, diced
2 green bell peppers, diced (with the center section removed)
3 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 package onion soup mix
2 cubes of bouillon (either beef, chicken or vegetable)
1/2 head cabbage cut into large dice (remove the outer leaves first and wash)
2 cans chopped tomatoes (with the juice)
herbs to taste, I like thyme, parsley and bay leaf, garlic (or garlic powder), ground black pepper

In a stock pot, heat olive oil or a cooking spray and saute the vegetables until tender. Add water so that the vegetables are completely under water, the onion soup mix and the bouillon cubes along with the herbs.  Let simmer for 10 minutes.  Add the cabbage and tomatoes and simmer for another 10 minutes.  Be careful to add more salt since the bouillon and soup mix already has a lot of sodium.
